Junior International Medals

Our club has achieved some amazing results on the international stage this season being involved in 2 out the 3 junior medals team GB have won this year.
And although the athletes themselves earned their medals with talent, hard work and perseverance, they have both pointed out that their success is due in no small part to the amazing dedication and support of our coaching team led by Bev and Trev Hunter.

Marathon World Championships – METKOVIC, Croatia – 19 – 22 September 2024

Mollie Ball along with K2 partner, Annabel Hutchinson from Reading, won her first international marathon medal – a bronze at the Marathon World Championships.

Competing over 19km, in the junior women’s K2, the duo secured a V wash position towards the back of the lead group off the line and kept the pace with the leaders as a group of six crew boats broke away around lap one. As the pace quickened coming into the first portage, Hutchinson and Ball put the effort in to break away with three other crews. Going left on the portage when the rest went right, they had a clear get out and were second back in the water.

The second portage offered the opportunity for Annabel and Mollie to break away with the South African boat, with whom they worked well together to confirm their medal positions in lap four. It was a sprint for the finish, with the duo coming away with bronze crossing the line with a time of 1:24:39.

2024 Olympic Hopes Regatta – Szeged, Hungary – 19-22 September

Philippe Ehrnrooth secured his first international medal, winning silver in the men’s under 17 K1 500m.
This is the first GB medal at the Olympic Hopes Regatta for 6 years! (Mens U17 K4 team won a bronze medal in 2018).

Our Devizes Canoe Club athlete powered to second place in the men’s K1 500m U17 A Final on the 3rd day of the competition, defeating both the Polish and Hungarian paddlers.

Philippe was the starring member of the 24-strong British team competing in two A Finals across the four-day competition, as he also joined forces with Alex Worgan (Richmond) to finish sixth in the men’s K2 1000m U17 A Final, posting a time of 3:25.99.

Gloucester Hasler

4 DCC paddlers raced at Gloucester and earned valuable club points which gave DCC 3rd place overall.
Well done to Neil Edgar and Kev Crabb, 1st place Div 6 K2, Nigel Chivers, 3rd place Div 8 K1 and Regan Toop 5th place Div 3 K1.

Saltford Hasler

A brisk headwind created some challenging conditions at Saltford and for some DCC paddlers, it was their first race. Resilience was also needed by our more experienced paddlers; Fred continued and finished despite a capsize and Neil & Kev had to walk back when their rudder wire broke while leading the field. A great team effort meant that DCC came 2nd overall!

Well done to Juliette Noble, Nina Brown, Pip Davey and Julie Wellingham who competed in their first hasler.

Some great results:

Mary Johnson 1st K1 Div 9
Charlie Mayo 3rd K1 Div 5 (and stayed dry!)

Winter Training Programme

Winter is coming!

The rain is here, it’s getting colder and the nights are getting longer – time for Devizes winter training to start over!

We’ve just had our first session and there will be more to follow. Sessions will include longer paddles further up the canal and some river training on the Thames, as well as time trial and effort sessions at the club. A timetable of sessions will be sent to those in the Winter Training Group. You do not have to be planning to do DW/Watersides to join in with these sessions, you are welcome to join in any that you choose. They can be a good way to monitor your progress and fitness over the winter months as well as an opportunity to paddle away from the club at times.

Let us know if you want to be added to our communications group on Spond* so that you know all of the session plans and results and can be kept in the loop! Reply to shop@devizescanoeclub.co.uk

* DCC is migrating all club communications onto Spond for efficiency, data security & safeguarding reasons. Club coaches will be closing the WhatsApp groups over the next few months, so please ensure that you give your details to your coach so you can be added.
