Coronavirus (COVID-19) Impact on the Club
27th March 2020
As a committee we have been monitoring the changing situation regarding coronavirus and Government guidance: Stay at Home, Protect the NHS and Save Lives. We have also been listening to our members opinions and concerns regarding the restriction of activities at the Club.
Until yesterday our guidance was proportionate and aligned to that issued by British Canoeing. It suspended the organised club programme and took the social areas of the club out of use.
As a consequence of new advice issued on 26th March 2020 yesterday by Wiltshire Police, the Canal & River Trust (CRT) together with other navigation authorities including HM Coastguard, the Environment Agency and Port of London Authority, it is now very clear that non-essential travel beyond the home, even to exercise, is strongly discouraged and use of the waterways for recreational paddling is NOT activity the government and its executive agencies consider acceptable. The committee has concluded, with regret, our guidance is no longer sufficient. As a consequence:
Access to the club’s facilities and equipment will cease with immediate effect.
From 17:00 on Saturday 28th March 2020 the club’s premises is closed.
From this time there are to be no individual visits to the club site or any of the facilities including the changing rooms or boat storage.
You are reminded that the C&RT own our launch site and have statutory powers over navigation on the waterway. Taking this into account, no launching of kayaks or canoes is permitted from our site at Lower Wharf with immediate effect.
As a Club we chose to support the guidance we have been given. You are free to remove your boats from the club’s facilities until 17:00 on Saturday 28th March 2020 when the club closes. After this time we will secure the club site without warning should it become necessary.
This decision will be reviewed by the Committee in the light of further Government guidance.
